Joseph Percy Crayon, born Joseph Percy Crain or Crane in 1841, was a schoolteacher in the Rockaway Township area that later became modern-day Denville. During that period, he changed his surname to Crayon and devoted much of his later life to documenting local history and genealogy.
He is best remembered for compiling the Rockaway Records, an extensive genealogical record of early Morris County families, including ironworkers, soldiers, farmers, and other residents whose lives shaped the region.
In 1903, the Newfoundland Village Improvement Society published Newfoundland in Word & Picture, incorporating Crayon’s historical and genealogical work alongside local images. The volume was engraved and printed by Joseph Kellogg & Co. of New York.
